And roses don’t make any noise, so there’s nothing to hear. But you probably wouldn’t want to eat it. One can appreciate a rose bush by admiring its beauty, then leaning over and smelling its scent. There are, after all, five senses – with sight being just one of them. “Gives pleasure to the senses” is a great way of phrasing it. Merriam-Webster’s definition of beauty is “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit.” Yet, the concept of beauty – especially the way we use it in everyday conversation – goes way beyond aesthetics. “Beauty,” as it is traditionally defined, makes no mention of emotions, feelings, or involuntary intuitive reactions. Stephanie Marie definitely isn’t overrated.
